Astigmatism Causes and Correction

Astigmatism is a defect of the human eye. It is known to be caused in cases where the cornea is curved incorrectly. The cure of the cornea in astigmatism is not the way it should have been normally. In general the cornea’s curve is spherical in shape. In astigmatism the cornea loses the spherical shape and becomes slightly oval in shape. The functionality of the cornea should be first understood in order to know what exactly astigmatism is.

Cornea is a major portion of the eye. It is a very smooth organ and is curved in equal dimensions at all the sides and directions. This is because it makes sure that the light that is entering the cornea has a focus in all the directions. People with astigmatism have their cornea curved more towards a direction which may cause the vision to be distorted and they are not able to get a focus on objects. This can be treated with ease as these days there are many astigmatism lenses available in the market today. The basic concern now is that the person should choose the best possible lens for himself according to the severity of the astigmatism he faces.

The special lenses used for the astigmatism patients are known as the toric lenses. They contain a unique correction technique which can also include a correction for nearsightedness and shortsightedness. Hence they are the best option available till date. Some of the major symptoms experienced by the astigmatism people are like the blurred vision, frequent headaches; squint in the eye etc. astigmatism is due to the refractive errors of the eye. It leads to the formation of two focus points in the eye instead of one. These days a refractive surgery is also being done to these people to get rid of it permanently.
